Printers (black and white as well as color) are located in computer labs or Instructional Technology Centers (ITCs) in many locations throughout campus. Users can print from computers within the labs or wirelessly from their own computers.
All UI faculty/staff/students have access to ITC printing with a valid HawkID. UI guests with a Guest HawkID may purchase guest printing PrintKeys at the Main Library Food 4 Thought or EMRB Cafe.

ITS will be upgrading PaperCut software. This includes the PaperCut Application server and the print servers. The expected downtime is a little over an hour, however, we are listing a 2-hour maintenance window.
The following printing services will be down during the maintenance window
- Printing in the ITCs
- Web print for the ITCs
- Web interface for PaperCut
- Printing to charge printers
- Printing that requires the use of the PaperCut Client software
Printing to IOWAPRINT01, IOWAPRINT02, IOWAPRINT03, and IOWAPRINT04 will be interrupted as the PaperCut software running on each is patched and the server restarted. However, it will not be down for the entire maintenance window.
ITS will be migrating PaperCut to a new server. During this time PaperCut will be unavailable.
The following printing services will be down during the maintenance window:

The migration is now expected to complete by 12:30 PM CST.
ITS will migrate print queue ITCPRINTING to new servers. During the maintenance window, printing will be unavailable on any of the ITC or residence hall public printers.
The new print servers will use the same names and IP addresses. There will be no impact on current mappings or connections.
The ITS Server Support Team will be restarting the print server IOWAPRINT02.iowa.uiowa to address a persistent networking issue. Documents sent to printers hosted on that server around that time may not print. The outage should last no longer than 15 minutes.
ITS will be upgrading the PaperCut server software. During this time ITC Printing, WebPrint, and print queues that use shared PaperCut accounts may be unavailable.
ITS will be performing maintenance on the Papercut database. During this time ITC printing, print release stations, mobile print release, web print, printing to charge printers, and printing using shared accounts may be unavailable.
Most printing for the print queues on IOWAPRINT01, IOWAPRINT02, IOWAPRINT03, and IOWAPRINT04 will be unaffected. Print queues on those servers will function normally and log data for PaperCut reports until the PaperCut service is available again.
Please contact ECM if you have any questions.
Print queues that use PaperCut will be unavailable during a planned maintenance. These include ITC Printing, WebPrint, and shared PaperCut accounts.
Print queues that do not utilize the PaperCut client will continue to work, but print jobs will not be logged in PaperCut until after the maintenance window.
Campus printing services may be unavailable while the PaperCut software is upgraded.
During the upgrade, print queues that utilize the PaperCut client to print will be unavailable. These include ITC Printing, Web Print, and print queues that use shared PaperCut accounts. Print queues that do not utilize the PaperCut client will continue to work, but print jobs will not be logged in PaperCut for printing counts until the print servers can contact PaperCut again.
To mitigate the risk of the Remote Code Execution on Windows Print Spooler Service disclosed last week by Microsoft, Enterprise Infrastructure is disabling and stopping the Print Spooler Service on all CAS, SAS, and co-managed servers unless it is explicitly needed (i.e. Print Servers and a handful of other systems).
A GPO (datactr-servers-printspooler-disabled) will be linked at the Datactr | Servers OU level that sets the Print Spooler service to disabled and stops it. Where the Print Spooler service is needed, a separate GPO (datactr-servers-printspooler-auto) can be linked to override the parent GPO and sets the service to automatic start.
The disable GPO will be linked at 12:00pm on Wednesday, July 7, and as systems refresh their policy (every 90 minutes), the Print Spooler service will get stopped and disabled. Please contact the ITS Help Desk with questions or concerns.
