ICON, powered by Canvas (Instructure), is the University of Iowa's learning management system (LMS). All Registrar affiliated courses are created in the LMS and are available for instructors to use if they wish.

Current Status
The Sexual Assault Prevention Education Program training is unable to pass grades to ICON. Students may not see an assigned grade upon completion of the course. IT staff are working with the vendor to resolve this issue. If this issue is encountered, please email a screenshot of completion to:

Maintenance
The ICON Dashboard servers will be upgraded during a maintenance window, Thursday 9/19, from 9-11 am.
No downtime is expected for users.
There will be a maintenance window of the ICON Dashboard on Saturday, September 28, 2024, from 8 AM to 10 AM in order to replace the SAN Storage for the backend database.
We expect the service downtime to be up to 1 hour. Access to the ICON Dashboard may not be available during this maintenance window.

Some services that are integrated into ICON are producing an error when they are accessed using the current version of Firefox in a specific configuration that blocks tracking between websites.
There are two options that will allow the services to work properly:
- Use another browser to access ICON (Chrome, Edge, etc.)
- Turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for uiowa.instructure.com (how to)
Integrations that are known to have problems with Enhanced Tracking Protection turned on:
- Zoom (when starting a meeting from the "Zoom" navigation bar tool in ICON)
- Using the Meeting ID or with another link direct to Zoom will allow you to join the meeting.

Due to a hardware failure the campus is currently experiencing network connectivity issues, both wired and wireless, in some areas. Some users are not able to connect to VPN or login to ICON. Work is underway to identify the scope of issues and resolve them.

For users using Google Drive, Canvas disabled the ability to submit assignments directly from a user's Google Drive. The workaround is to download the Google doc and upload it to the assignment from your device.
ICON is experiencing connection issues with the Google Drive and Office 365 apps. The vendor is aware of these issues and is working on a fix. Users can still access Office 365 outside of ICON without issue.

ICON will be down for planned database maintenance to apply an update that fixes several data corruption bugs. Users will not be able to access ICON for up to one minute during this time.

Users accessing ICON via Chrome version 96 in Windows 10/11 are reporting issues with content pages showing blank screens or showing only the content navigation buttons on ICON course pages. More information and updates can be found on the Canvas support site.
As a temporary workaround, Canvas recommends using a different browser such as Mozilla Firefox. Canvas has also suggested that clearing Chrome cache and cookies could help but is not always working permanently.
ITS is continuing to monitor this situation.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is experiencing a major outage in the us-east-1 (N. Virginia) region. (https://its.uiowa.edu/alert/123491) As a result, some university services that utilize resources in AWS could be experiencing issues with performance and availability.
ICON/Canvas (https://uiowa.instructure.com/) is currently seeing intermittent slowness and errors.
UICapture (https://uicapture.hosted.panopto.com/) is currently seeing extended processing times for new uploads. Regular upload speeds, session management, and playback should be available. New videos produced with the Zoom Cloud Recording function may also be delayed at this time.
Top Hat (https://app.tophat.com/) is currently experiencing performance or availability issues.
Portfolium (https://teach.uiowa.edu/portfolium) is currently seeing intermittent slowness and errors.
Kaltura (https://mediaspace.uiowa.edu/ and in ICON) there could be intermittent errors and videos might be slow to load.
We will continue to update this alert as problems are identified and resolved.

Starting May 20, ICON will show preferred pronouns for students, faculty, and staff who’ve set public pronouns using the MyUI or Employee Self Service systems.
Pronouns will appear alongside users’ names in several ICON locations, including comment fields, discussions, people pages, and profile pages. See the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology site for more info about the change.
Canvas (ICON) will be updating their database management system on the back-end to address a bug they've found that could otherwise result in long periods of downtime in Canvas. This update is a proactive measure to reduce chances of an outage in the system.
This event will last up to 60 minutes. We expect approximately 10 minutes of impact to your availability during this time.

Update: Canvas has fixed the underlying issue that caused submissions made via Turnitin LTI to return a file name of "default_filename.txt". Canvas has also run an automated script that should repair the majority of papers affected by the issue.
Original Alert: Some student submissions for Turnitin assignments are not displaying in Speedgrader in ICON, instead they are displayed as “default_filename.txt.” ITS staff are working with the vendor to resolve this issue.
In the meantime, the workaround is to use Turnitin’s Feedback Studio by going to the Grades or Assignments page and clicking on the color-coded percentage speech bubble to access and grade papers.

Original Notice: ITS is working with Microsoft and Canvas to investigate an issue where users may be unable to access Office 365 files within Canvas modules. Users are able to add Office 365 items to modules but users will be unable to login and view new or existing Office 365 module items.
A workaround for this issue is to login to https://office365.uiowa.edu and navigate to OneDrive before accessing the module item. We will update this notice as soon as more information is available.
